BAHA'I Faith Goldcoast Community

The formation of the Gold Coast Baha'i community dates back to January 1974.

Lillian Bosch, an American artist, became a Baha’i in 1973 whilst on a visit to the United States. Lillian had been living on the Gold Coast since 1968 and established the highly respected Sunfish Art Gallery at Broadbeach in 1970. She became an Australian citizen in 1974. With the help of friends, Lillian was instrumental in mobilizing the formation of the Gold Coast Baha’i community. The early community shared a vision of the oneness of humanity expressed through unity in diversity.

By March 1974, the number of Baha'is on the Gold Coast had grown and the first Local Spiritual Assembly – an elected body of nine members that oversees the administrative affairs of the community – was formed.

Over the first few decades since the formation of the Gold Coast Baha'i Community, all meetings, celebrations and community building activities were carried out in homes of individual Baha'is.

In 1995 a property was purchased in Ashmore, and was extensively renovated into what is now The Baha'i Centre of the Gold Coast. It was officially opened by the Lord Mayor (Ray Stevens) on the 19th August 1995. A representative of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Australia was present, and a message was received specially for the occasion from the Universal House of Justice (the international governing body of the Baha'i world). Different Baha'i gatherings including Baha'i Holy Days and Sunday Devotions are held at the Baha'i Centre and are open to the public to attend.

Today, Baha'is living on the Gold Coast come from different racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds and strive to contribute to the betterment of the communities in which they live.
